Marine Protection Based on Local Wisdom "Kebang Lewa Lolon"
The Liko Lapak Ai Nama community in South Solor, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), is a traditional fishing community experiencing declining catches due to the prevalence of environmentally unfriendly fishing practices such as fish bombing, trawling, and large-scale fishing that damages coral reefs and marine ecosystems. These practices have been occurring since the late 1970s, or for approximately 42 years. This has threatened the sustainability of fishermen's livelihoods and the ecological balance of the waters that have long been the mainstay of coastal communities.
With support Dana Nusantara and assistance from the Tana Ile Boleng Foundation (YTIB), the community then implemented local wisdom-based marine protection "Kebang Lewa Lolon" by involving 6 communities in five villages with a mapped water area of 549,81 hectares, including 64,84 hectares that function as a coral reef protection area that has been recognized as a People's Management Area (WKR) by the government. This initiative has a direct impact on 6.000 fishermen and in the long term is ecologically beneficial for the preservation of the sea that supports the lives of the people of East Nusa Tenggara Province.
