Ngerumat Source: Water, Traditions and Heritage of Osing

NGERUMAT SUMBER: Rehabilitation of Springs and Revitalization of Local Knowledge of the Osing Indigenous Community regarding Water as a Source of Life

Producer Venedio Nala Ardisa, Scriptwriter Anasrullah, Resource Person Sarino-Chairman of Osing Rejopuro Customary, Cinematography Gensava Fiqri, Picture Editor Gensavana Fiqri, Voice Over Elza Zulandita, Artistic Director Ilham Saifulloh, Production Team Budi Hartono, Bagus Prianto, Dinda Anggun Lestari

In the Osing customary area, particularly in Glagah District (Kemiren Village, Olehsari Village, Kampunganyar Village, and Glagah Village) and Licin District (Banjar Village), water sources are facing increasingly serious pressure, both ecologically and culturally. Several springs are beginning to lose their capacity due to land conversion, reduced natural vegetation, and the decline of traditional practices that have played a crucial role in maintaining the springs spiritually and socially.

On the other hand, the community, particularly the younger generation, is losing knowledge about the cultural and ecological value of water sources. This situation has the potential to weaken the community's role in protecting and preserving their customary territories. This situation is exacerbated by the suboptimal state support for strengthening conservation practices based on indigenous knowledge and initiatives.

Through  “GROOMING THE SOURCE”, the community is working to address these challenges. This program encourages the active involvement of indigenous communities, especially the younger generation, in restoring the physical condition of water sources, reviving traditional rituals related to spring maintenance, and documenting and disseminating local knowledge passed down through generations.

With this approach, conservation efforts not only focus on technical environmental restoration, but also on reinforcing the cultural and spiritual values that have long been the main foundation of the Osing indigenous people in maintaining the sustainability of their livelihoods.
