Raising Hope in the Struggle for Land Rights - Participatory Mapping of Sumber Jaya Village, Musi Banyuasin

KPA The South Sumatra Region and the Sriwijaya Farmers Union (SPS) conducted participatory mapping activities in Sumber Jaya Village, Babat Supat District, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra with direct funding support from the Nusantara Fund. The activity began with a village meeting between SPS administrators and several farmer representatives, including several village officials.

This meeting discussed mapping techniques such as introduction to tools; procedures for recording mapping data; formation of a mapping team consisting of village teams and SPS and KPA South Sumatra region including the division of roles and responsibilities.

Apart from that, the village meeting also discussed and re-discussed the farmers' strategies, challenges and opportunities in fighting for their land rights.

The mapping was carried out for three days from 09-14 December 2022. Fifteen (15) community representatives who were considered to have knowledge of the agricultural land boundaries, were directly and actively involved in LPRA mapping activities. After taking coordinate points and making sketches in the field, the GIS team then processes the data and produces LPRA data.

Participatory mapping of Sumber Jaya Village produced two maps. The first is the LPRA map of the Sumber Jaya Village community (149 heads of families, 439 women, 450 men) covering an area of 298 hectares of those facing agrarian conflict. The second is the Business Land Map II of the Sumber Jaya Village community covering an area of 302 hectares which is included in the area. A letter from the Village Government addressed to the President, the Minister of ATR/BPN, and KSP to encourage the resolution of the agrarian conflict faced by the Sumber Jaya community was also delivered.

Apart from maps, participatory mapping in Sumber Jaya Village is also an important momentum to re-energize the hope and enthusiasm of the community and the Village Government to continue fighting for guaranteed land rights.
