Community Consolidation of Indigenous Peoples of Sambas Regency

According to data from the BRWA (Traditional Area Registration Agency) of West Kalimantan until 2020, there are around 1,8 million hectares of customary territory whose distribution has been identified. However, in that year only 171.620 hectares of customary areas were designated by the Regent in 5 districts/cities. The latest data from the BRWA website as of January 2023 shows a significant increase, namely 36 Regent's Decrees regarding the recognition of indigenous communities with a customary area of 608.599 hectares and 20 Minister of Environment and Forestry Decrees for the recognition of customary forests with an area of 50.712 hectares have been issued.

Regional Regulations (Perda) regarding indigenous communities and customary forests have also been issued in 8 West Kalimantan Regencies, namely Sintang; Porcupine; Sanggau; Melawi; Kapuas Hulu; Sekadau; Stuffed; and Ketapang. Meanwhile for Sambas Regency it is still in process until now.

As an effort to encourage the acceleration of the District Regulation process. Sambas mentioned above, then the Regional Management (PW) of the Indigenous Peoples Alliance of the Archipelago (AMAN) West Kalimantan took the initiative to carry out Consolidation activities  with Indigenous Community communities in Sambas. The participants who attended the activity came from six Indigenous Community members and prospective members AMAN in the Regional Management AMAN Regency. Sambas.

The six communities participating in the activity are the Dayak Salako Tapak'ng Community; Subah Dayak Community; Sungai Kelambu Malay Community; Nyayat Dayak Community; Simpayang Dayak Community; and the Sajingan Dayak Community. The consolidation session focused on bringing together the understanding of the participants in developing a joint framework, namely the advocacy steps needed to encourage the acceleration of regional policies in the form of Regional Regulations on the Recognition and Protection of Indigenous Peoples and recognition of Indigenous Peoples and Customary Forests in Sambas.

Apart from that, consolidation activities also increase the knowledge capacity of participants in preparing data that meets certain requirements as the main prerequisite in the process of proposing recognition to the local regional government. The data in question consists of social data, namely narrative profiles of indigenous communities and spatial data, namely maps of customary areas compiled jointly by indigenous communities. In this activity, the FGD session was also carried out as a space for sharing and discussion to enrich the participants' insight, especially in identifying the potential that exists in their respective communities, such as economic, social and cultural potential.
