Participatory Mapping of Sustainable Land Use Planning Models in Nusantara Villages, South Sumatra

The United Indonesian Farmers Forum (FPNB) with assistance from WALHI South Sumatra accesses and uses the Nusantara Fund Direct Funding for participatory mapping activities in Nusantara Village, Air Sugihan District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra Province. Land use mapping of Nusantara Village is expected to provide factual critical input to the Spatial Planning of the district or city through the description of the conditions and forms of regional management that already exist in the community, as well as being a foundation for making equitable and sustainable planning.

It is hoped that the land use mapping of Nusantara Villages will provide critical, factual input to the district or city Regional Spatial Planning by describing the conditions and forms of regional management that already exist in society, as well as being the foundation for creating just and sustainable planning. The series of activities will take place from December 23, 2022 to January 26, 2023.

The mapping process is carried out in 6 sub-activities: (1) Village meeting; (2) Participatory mapping training for FPNB members; (3) Taking coordinate points; (4) Layout; (5) Verification; and (6) Further verification/submission of maps.

The participatory mapping model used in this activity is Sustainable Land Use Planning (SLUP), namely a community-based regional planning model in an effort to promote equitable rights to space and community land use planning, where indigenous peoples or local communities are the main actors in planning.

Mapping of Nusantara Village land use can strengthen the community's economy through optimizing the management of superior and productive sustainable food land but still oriented towards ecosystem restoration as well as a formulation of protection from the threat of extractive industry expansion which is the source of various environmental damage, climate crises and social conflicts.

The activity began with a village meeting where the United Archipelago Farmers Forum and the Nusantara Village community discussed and synergized to determine the mapping plan and were actively involved in implementing the activity. The village meeting also explained the form and purpose of mapping, forming a work/implementation team, creating a timeline of activities.

Participants in the participatory mapping training were 22 FPNB members who were also part of the team that carried out the mapping. Mapping/taking coordinate points by the mapping team includes village boundaries, public facilities, settlements, agricultural land, etc. Next, process the layout of the data that has been taken by the mapping team. The results of the mapping data layout are then verified. The map as the final result of the mapping process was submitted by the United Archipelago Farmers Forum to the Nusantara Village government.

The quite heavy challenge faced in this mapping activity was the weather conditions due to the rainy season, so that many village roads were difficult to pass and the communication network was very limited. However, from the hard work of the entire team and the facilitators together WALHI South Sumatra, the entire activity process was successfully implemented and achieved important achievements, namely the availability of the Nusantara Village Map in the form of an Administrative Map and Land Use Map submitted by FPNB and received by the Head of Nusantara Village.

Activities directly foster participation and collaboration between members and the community by devoting energy and time to make participatory mapping a success. This activity also provides knowledge and implementation of training for FPNB members and village communities regarding the process of making village maps. Thus, the results of this participatory mapping make the community more aware of the portrait of the Nusantara Village area administratively and its land use.
