Nusantara Fund Direct Funding – Cycle 1 (2023) for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Indonesia
Indonesia, Jakarta – December 7, 2023, Following the launch of the Nusantara Fund on May 8, 2023 and the implementation of direct funding pilot projects in 30 regions, the Nusantara Fund Direct Funding for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities was launched for the first time in Indonesia.
Nusantara Fund is calling on Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Indonesia to access the “Nusantara Fund Direct Funding – Cycle 1 (2023)”. Proposal submissions can be made until 31 December 2023. Detailed technical instructions and forms can be accessed at bit.ly/pendanaancepatNF
The Nusantara Fund Direct Funding Opportunity is aimed at Indigenous Peoples, Farmers, Fishermen, Women, Young Generation, and other local communities at the grassroots level who have collective initiatives together and can contribute to achieving the Nusantara Fund targets. The Nusantara Fund direct funding scheme and mechanism is the first in Indonesia that is adjusted to the needs of the recipients of the funds. The direct funding value is a maximum of 100 million Rupiah.
Even though much literature has emphasized how great the contribution of indigenous peoples and local communities is in protecting and preserving the earth, it is considered that indigenous peoples and local communities have not received appropriate financial support. Lack of funding to support Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities is one of the six main obstacles to the effectiveness of conservation action in Asia, this was stated in a collaborative report from Rights & Resource Initiatives (RRI) released in February 2022. In practice, IPLCs also often face difficulties to access funding, due to complicated administrative and bureaucratic requirements.
The Nusantara Fund Direct Funding scheme and mechanism are designed to be very simple, but still adhere to accountability standards to facilitate access to funding by indigenous peoples and local communities. Indigenous peoples and local communities are not just program objects but key subjects who design and implement collective efforts and initiatives together to address the problems, urgency, needs, and unique situations of each indigenous people and local community, so that this funding support can be directly beneficial to the grassroots level.
The true protectors of the archipelago are indigenous peoples, farmers, fishermen, women's groups, the younger generation and other local communities who make joint collective efforts and initiatives to maintain the sustainability of natural resources and the environment and biodiversity in the midst of the global climate crisis. The efforts and initiatives they undertake are actually for the benefit of future generations and the safety of humanity from climate change.
Direct funding support from the Nusantara Fund is expected to expand, enlarge, and strengthen the efforts and initiatives of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Indonesia to move together to overcome challenges and fight for rights while remaining steadfast as #ProtectorsoftheArchipelago.
