NUSA-ANTARA.co.id – Bumi Sawerigading Foundation (YBS) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on integrated and integrated waste management in the Ba'tan traditional community, held at the Battang Village Office, West Wara, Palopo City, on Thursday, February 6, 2025. This activity was attended by the Director of YBS Abd. Malik Saleh, Head of Battang Village Rahman, Head of the Environmental Service (DLH) Emil Nugraha Salam, and the Mayor's Expert Staff for People's Welfare, M. Taufiqurrahman.

Emil Nugraha Salam urged the public to manage plastic and organic waste separately and highlighted the need to update the Regional Regulation (Perda) on waste management. M. Taufiqurrahman emphasized the importance of waste sorting at the household level as the first step in waste management. The interactive discussion session was facilitated by YBS Advocacy and Policy Coordinator, Nur Anwar, along with Mirdat and Wardi. The discussion involved traditional leaders, youth, women, and representatives from the village government.

YBS Director, Abd. Malik Saleh, explained that the waste and flooding issues in Palopo are interconnected. This FGD was held in the upstream areas (Battang and West Battang) to address these challenges. This activity is part of the Indigenous/Local Community Empowerment Program for Sustainable Economic and Ecological Watershed Waste Management in the Ba'tan Indigenous Community. Recommendations from the discussion will be further formulated in a workshop with the community and relevant regional government agencies.

"If there is a waste base or terminal in the area, YBS is ready to purchase sorted plastic waste." — Abd. Malik Saleh, Director of YBS
