In 2010, farmers in Banten realized that their movement was still fragmented and poorly organized. To strengthen their struggle, they formed the Banten Farmers Movement (P2B), a farmers' union that aims to advocate for the resolution of agrarian conflicts and the fulfillment of land rights. After a long struggle for 34 years, finally in October 2023 they succeeded in obtaining 12 communal land certificates covering 127 hectares which were distributed to 195 P2B members in five villages, two sub-districts.
Communal certificates prevent individuals from selling their land certificates unilaterally without the consent of other landowners. Land ownership with a communal or shared system is the union's choice to ensure control, ownership, and use of land in the hands of farmers so that it can be maintained and sustainable.
Entering 2024, P2B's desire arose to have educational facilities that could be utilized by children of farming families and the surrounding community. With the support of the Nusantara Fund Direct Funding, P2B established the People's School as a center for increasing capacity, ideologization, and access to education for P2B members and the surrounding community, especially those directly adjacent to the redistribution land in Lebak Regency, Banten.
The People's School was established on 2.500 square meters of land, part of 127 hectares of collective land in Kampung Damara, Gununganten Village, Cimarga District. This school not only provides direct benefits to 570 P2B members and their families, but also has the potential to reach up to 2.000 local residents.
The construction process begins with member consolidation, work plan preparation, and material preparation, then continued with physical work through mutual cooperation. P2B members who have construction skills lead the construction, while certain technical work involves professionals with appropriate pay. In some cases, P2B members raise funds to cover additional costs outside the initial plan.
In addition to building infrastructure, they also prepare medium and long-term plans for the sustainability of the school and establish networks with Banten youth to support school operations and find teachers. The People's School not only functions as a formal education center for children of P2B members, but also as a capacity development space for all members. Here, the community can take reading, writing, and arithmetic lessons regularly every week.
Despite its operation, Sekolah Rakyat faces a number of challenges. Several development plans need to be adjusted to field conditions, while targets such as building a fence and providing facilities are still in progress. However, P2B's spirit remains high. They overcome obstacles by utilizing more environmentally friendly local materials and strengthening the tradition of mutual cooperation. P2B also plans to build agricultural demonstration plots around the school as a place of practice for children and youth.
The People's School is not only a center of education, but also a symbol of social change for P2B. This school raises collective awareness and strengthens the solidity of the organization through regular meetings held there. Through education, P2B becomes more solid in fighting for the Agrarian Reform that they have long supported. Mutual cooperation and solidarity are the main foundations that bring progress to P2B, both in the field of education and in maintaining the results of land redistribution. The People's School is expected to strengthen the foothold for the struggle for agrarian justice in the future.
