Collective Economic Transformation of Reja Mulya Local Farmers Organization Through Papaya Cultivation

Local Farmers Organization (OTL) Reja Mulya is one of the members of the Independent Farmers Union (STAM) located in Caruy Village, Cipari District, Cilacap Regency, Central Java. In 2010, members of this farmers organization were among 5.141 other farmers who received a land redistribution program with a total land area of 266 hectares which was handed over to farmers in Caruy Village, Mekarsari Village, Kutasari Village, and Karangreja Village. This land redistribution was handed over directly by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) during the 50th anniversary of National Agrarian. For years, farmers have used the land for roads, settlements and agricultural land. Unfortunately, the processing of the agricultural land is considered not optimal.

To increase the productivity of its crops, OTL Reja Mulyai encourages collective cultivation of California papaya varieties. The goal is to improve welfare while strengthening organizational resilience. Although in its implementation, there are still challenges such as the number of members that is not comparable to the area of collective land owned by members of the farmer's union and the lack of papaya seeds. However, farmers still managed to cultivate papaya to transform their collective economy by forming a work team involving 20 members of the farmer's union. A total of 2000 papaya trees have been successfully planted and are in the maintenance period.

In addition, OTL Reja Mulya also conducts training on how to select superior seeds, good planting techniques and methods, planting methods, how to control pests and plant diseases, how to harvest and good post-harvest handling. This aims to improve farmers' understanding and ability in carrying out papaya cultivation. In addition, the papaya fruit produced is also quite good. Furthermore, the working group that has been formed is expected to be a driving force to expand the impact of the economic transformation efforts carried out by OTL Reja Mulya.
