REVITALIZATION OF TRADITIONS AND LANGUAGE OF THE TANGKULOWI INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY OF CENTRAL SULAWESI
THROUGH TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS
Modernization and the disruption of intergenerational knowledge transfer have impacted the younger generation of the Tangkulowi Indigenous Community. Younger generations of the Tangkulowi Indigenous Community now rarely use their local language in their daily lives. Noble traditions are also being abandoned. Meanwhile, noble values related to customs, culture, and collective identity are embodied in language and traditions. This also includes the values and role of the Tangkulowi Indigenous Community, which has traditionally guarded and protected protected forest areas.
The construction of a traditional school is a solution to this problem. It is hoped that the school will preserve and develop culture and traditions within the younger generation. Therefore, the elders and members of the Tangkulowi Indigenous Community deliberated on the plan to build a traditional school. They renovated the meeting hall to create a dedicated space for the traditional school. A core team tasked with managing the traditional school has also been formed.
The traditional school development program has impacted the continuity of the traditions and culture of the Tangkulowi Indigenous Community. This program is a strategic effort to address the decline in native language speakers and preserve local traditions and values. Regionally, this program has direct implications for the 7.117-hectare Tangkulowi customary territory.
