Development of Indigenous Community-Owned Enterprises (BUMMA) to Strengthen the Economy of Indigenous Communities in Dompu Regency
An initiative undertaken by Indigenous Communities in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, is an effort to improve the economy through business management. The Padompo Jaya Indigenous Community Enterprise (BUMMA) was established to increase market access for economic products produced by Indigenous Communities in Dompu Regency. Its members' products range from agricultural products and spices to woven fabrics. Located in the district center, BUMMA Padompo Jaya collects community products to reach consumers easily and widely.
Through the initiative, the management, together with the Indigenous Community, strengthened the management of BUMMA, starting with an economic assessment conducted in seven of its member indigenous communities. This economic potential assessment was conducted to determine the potential for economic business development in the seven indigenous communities. The seven indigenous communities are the Bada, Ruhu Ruma Hu'u, Dowa, Ranggo, Saneo, Kandai Satu, and Lepadi Indigenous Communities. The assessment results showed that the seven indigenous communities have economic potential from the agricultural and livestock products they manage in their customary territories. Starting from rice, corn, vegetables, honey, spices such as ginger, turmeric, and Javanese ginger. In addition to agricultural products, they also have cattle and goat farms. Other products produced and have economic value include woven cloth from the Ranggo Indigenous Community. Some of these products are marketed in local markets and some to collectors.
The assessment results were discussed with BUMMA administrators and members. The meeting agreed on ways BUMMA could market products from the seven assessed indigenous communities. Of the seven indigenous communities, the products identified for marketing include muna pa'a cloth, nggoli cloth, traditional spices and ta'a leaves, rice from the Kandai Indigenous Community Business Group, and beads for traditional clothing.
The strengthening of BUMMA Padompo Jaya reflects the collective efforts of the Dompu Indigenous Community to build a collective economic enterprise for its members. Through assessment, deliberation, and joint management, BUMMA serves not only as a product marketing platform but also as a platform for learning and community economic organization.
