The Lepar Lau Tengah Farmers Group (KTLLT) is a local farmer organization in Rambung Baru Village and Bingkawan Village, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. Since 2015, they have been facing an agrarian conflict with the largest funeral service provider company in Asia, with branches in six countries, including Indonesia. The company claims 75 hectares of farmers' agricultural land to be used as a cemetery complex, threatening the livelihoods of around 800 farmers from 100 families who have managed the land for generations.

The phenomenon of commercialization of the funeral business in Indonesia has become increasingly widespread lately, with large companies offering exclusive funeral services for the upper class. Ironically, in the case experienced by KTLLT, the rights of the living to farm and maintain their livelihoods seem to be less important. Will the deceased rest in peace if they know that their graves are built on the suffering of the displaced?

To maintain land rights, KTLLT initiated the Priority Agrarian Reform Location (LPRA) consolidation strategy, an approach developed together with the Agrarian Reform Consortium (KPA). Through this strategy, farmer groups strengthen agrarian struggles with education, advocacy, and community-based economic development.

One of the main programs implemented is the True Agrarian Reform Academy (ARAS), which provides agrarian law education and advocacy to young cadres, women, and KTLLT members. To date, 140 community members have been equipped with an understanding of land rights and strategies to defend their land. As part of their legal advocacy efforts, they also conduct participatory mapping using drones, producing accurate LPRA data and maps to strengthen their land claims.

In addition to advocacy, KTLLT also works on 10 hectares of land by planting durian, crystal guava, and starfruit. This collective management model is not only a source of economic income but also strengthens evidence of physical control over the land they are fighting for. With these steps, KTLLT continues to strive to defend their land rights and build a more sovereign future for the farming community.
