Young Guardians of Gowa Springs Maintain Agricultural and Spring Traditions
The Spring Guardian Youth Group is comprised of young people living in the Bulu-Bulu area of Langkoa Hamlet, Tonasa Village, Tombolopao District, Gowa Regency. The area is currently designated as a protected forest and is in the process of submitting an agrarian reform application through the Agrarian Reform Object Land (TORA) policy. Most of the community relies on traditional farming and cattle ranching for their livelihoods. Furthermore, the young generation has also developed an awareness of the importance of protecting the 18 springs in the area, as water is a basic need for the community, used for agriculture, livestock farming, and to meet clean water needs in Tombolo Pao District.
To improve the collective economy of the younger generation while preserving traditional agricultural traditions, the Spring Guardian Youth Group took the initiative to build an educational center for spring conservation and maintain their ancestral agricultural traditions by cultivating organic horticultural crops on a 1,85-hectare collective plot of land. Consequently, the Bulu'-Bulu' youth group's organic horticultural practices have successfully maintained soil and environmental fertility.
Furthermore, Bulu-Bulu Village has now undergone an upgrade in its function to become an Ancestral Agricultural Education Center and Water Conservation, and has also produced young leaders and women in Tonasa Village. Furthermore, regarding the development of the education center, this has had an impact on strengthening the knowledge of the younger generation regarding efforts to protect springs and customary lands and expanding the support network from various parties related to efforts to protect springs in Bulu'-Bulu'. This program has impacted an area in Tombolo Pao District, Gowa, covering an area of 26.091 hectares.
