Pagerwangi Farmers Alliance Initiative for Water Access

The people of Pagerwangi Village have traditionally occupied 10 hectares of former Dutch colonial land. A total of 78 families live in Pagerwangi Village. The majority of the residents are farmers and self-employed in food stalls. In 2017, the community faced intimidation and threats from a housing developer seeking land in Pagerwangi Village. Therefore, they established the Pagerwangi Farmers Alliance (ATAP) as a forum for gathering and developing collective plans and strategies to address shared challenges. In addition to the threat of land grabbing, the Pagerwangi Village community has also struggled to meet its water needs.

To address these shared challenges, ATAP and the Pagerwangi Village community implemented three activities: drilling wells, planting productive perennials, and agrarian reform education. The wells were designed to address the community's water needs. Currently, the community has to spend Rp600.000 per month to purchase 8,000 liters of water. To support water conservation efforts, the community also planted 24 durian and avocado seedlings. Productive perennials were also chosen to increase community income by selling the fruit. Finally, agrarian reform education was conducted to improve ATAP members' understanding of production, governance, distribution, and consumption during land tenure.

These three activities have socially impacted 15.693 people, comprising 6.062 men, 5.709 women, and 3.922 young people. The well-drilling initiative reduced the annual expenditure of 78 families by Rp561.600.000. The durian and avocado planting initiative has an economic value of Rp60 million per year, provided the harvest is carried out four years after planting. Environmentally, the planting activity also impacted an area of 592 hectares.
